Feeding your older dog with help from Autarky ...

As dogs age their appetite can decrease, this is relatively normal in older dogs as their sense of taste and smell decreases with age making food less exciting to them. The first thing to rule out when a dog loses its appetite is the possibility of any health problems such as pain or illness. If your dog has been checked by your vet and there are no underlying issues, here are a few ways you can make food exciting for them again.

Feed an age-specific diet. Mature diets have been formulated to include the correct number of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, calories, and protein to support ageing bodies. Senior diets may also contain herbs that are appetising to dogs like mint, dandelion, ginger, oregano, rosemary, and thyme to increase palatability and encourage eating. Autarky’s Mature diets and Chudleys Senior include a blend of appetising herbs to tempt even the fussiest of dogs.

Little and often. Usually, dogs are fed twice a day, however as they get older, they may prefer smaller, frequent meals. This can encourage them to eat and properly digest their food.

Mix it up, add some wet food. Wet dog food is an excellent choice for those that need to be tempted at mealtimes. Due to its soft texture, wet food can be beneficial for older dogs that may have fewer teeth or sensitive gums as it’s easier for them to chew. Also, older dogs with a deteriorating sense of smell and taste may benefit from wet food added to their kibble as it has a richer and meatier aroma.
Add a small amount of water or gravy. This will not only soften the kibble and enhance the aroma, but it will also help with digestion and naturally increase fluid intake, a great way to increase water intake in dogs that don’t drink enough during the day.

Raise the bowl. Older dogs sometimes find it difficult to eat from bowls on the floor. Think about raising the feed bowl or getting an elevated feeder so that your dog doesn't have to bend their neck as much.
